Auction Description

This short Enfield rifle was made by Thomas Turner in 1861 and is an attractive attic brown color, with the iron mountings of the Army version of the P-1856 Short Rifle

The Birmingham contractors sold all of the Enfield rifles they had in stock and could manufacture during the first year of the War to both North and South during the War, and this short rifle was made by Thomas Turner (as shown by his name stamped into the wood on the belly of the stock) in 1861 (as shown by the lockplate date). It bears the cartouche of the Birmingham Small Arms Trade (a Crown over BSAT) in the wood back of the trigger guard; Turner was a founder of the BSAT in 1861.

This was made for private sale, and not for the British military, and is a variation of the Model 1856 Short Rifle, with iron butt plate and trigger guard. The swivels are still present as is the rear sight, often knocked off of these Enfields. The mechanics are crisp, and the hammer holds firmly in both half cock and full cock. The standard Model 1856 rifle has a lug on the side of the barrel for a sword bayonet, and this does not – I see no sign it ever has such a lug. Weapons made for sale to private buyer could vary from the military standards. The BOTTOM of the barrel has the Birmingham proofs, and the bore size markings of 25 and 25, meaning the .577 British standard military caliber. There is no rifling visible in the bore, and my measurement if bore size varies between .58 and .60. I don’t know if the rifling was shot out or intentionally bored out.

You will find Thomas Turner as a maker of finer Enfields, including target models made for the use of British Volunteer Clubs, and I’ve seen one Turn made short rifle that looked just like this one – no checkering or engraving – but a plain barrel in the British .557 caliber, and a second barrel in the smaller .451 Whitworth target caliber. I have no idea if this was one of these, but it is interesting that all the proofs and caliber sizes are on the bottom of the barrel, almost as if it was expected that someone checking for proof test verification would be expected to be looking at a removed barrel.

This in an attractive attic brown and uncleaned short Enfield rifle, and displays well.
