Auction Description

Nice example of M1842 Springfield Percussion Musket, smoothbore .69 cal. All original. 3 bands in place, tight and original, it appears. Brass front sight. Approximately 50% smooth chocolate brown patina and 50% original metal finish with infrequent pitting. Hammer is tight and fully functional in both positions. All mechanical movements appropriate and defined. No rattles or loose parts anywhere on the weapon. Nipple has defined edges, very slight pitting and looks original, also tight. Sling swivels are freely moving/original. One piece Walnut stock tight against hardware. The lockplate is stamped with Federal eagle in front of the hammer and vertically marked " Spring-field" in two lines behind the hammer. The lock is dated 1845 and tang is dated 1846 (this date is legible but not as crisp as the lock date). The barrel is stamped with the correct V/P. and eagle head proof marks are on the breech. There is an additional proof mark on the barrel at breech forward of the V/P proof. It appears to be 4 numbers and letters over a "P". Not sure what that proof indicates. Perhaps a refit during the war? The butt plate is marked U.S. clearly and silver in appearance with slight pitting/oxidation.The sling swivels are riveted/original it appears. One piece walnut stock with hardly legible cartouche marks that are vague at best. Beautiful reddish brown stock with minimal bruises, marks and free of carved initials or unit nomenclature. The trumpet ramrod is a one piece, steel or iron and threaded and appears to be either original or a very old replacement. There are many single letters stamped in various parts of the musket. Im not sure what they represent other than the manufacturer or assembly plant designations. More pics available
